How does a Middle Ear Infection Occur?

Middle ear infection is mainly caused by bacteria in the nasal mucus flowing into the middle ear. Children can become infected very easily and infection occurs for various reasons. Younger children, especially younger than 2 years old are more prone to infection as they have lower immunity to bacteria. Also, because the passage between a child’s nose and ears is short and flat, infections are more likely to be common. Other reasons may be that children who tend to have stuffy noses may not be able to blow their nose, resulting in mucus buildup.

How do I know if my baby has an ear infection?

It is hard to tell if your baby is in fact suffering from an infection, but there are some signs and symptoms. Some signs that your child may have an infection are if they cry and occassionally touch their ears from pain or discomfort. If you believe your baby is showing signs of an ear infection, please consult a doctor as soon as possible.

How is a Middle Ear Infection treated?

  • When treating Middle Ear Infections, doctors may use a professional device similar to the BabySmile aspirator to clear nasal passages and remove bacteria.
  • In most cases antibiotics will be prescribed, but these are known to have potentially harmful effects on children. A recent study showed that 15% of the children who were prescribed antibiotics to treat middle ear infection suffered from diarrhea or vomiting and up to 5% had an allergic reaction.
  • In some cases of prolonged or increasing inflammation, a painful and costly surgery may be required to pierce the eardrum and drain the pus.
